Memo Structure

Your technical memo should be structured into three main sections: Introduction, Description of Alternatives, and Discussion and Recommendations. Each section has specific requirements outlined below.

Introduction

Briefly introduce the topic of project delivery methods in civil engineering.

Provide context for the importance of selecting an appropriate project delivery method.

State the objective of the memo, which is to analyze different delivery methods and recommend the most suitable one for a specific project scenario.

  1. Description of Alternatives

Delivery Methods: Describe each project delivery method (e.g., Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, Construction Manager at Risk, etc.).

Contractual Arrangements: Explain the sequence of contractual arrangements between the owner, design professional, and constructor for each method.

  • Advantages and Disadvantages: Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method over the others. Consider factors such as cost, time, risk, flexibility, and quality.
  • Trends: Describe current trends in the use of each delivery method. Indicate whether their use has increased or decreased and whether this trend is expected to continue in the future.
  • Discussion and Recommendations
  1. Evaluation: Evaluate the findings from the previous section.

Recommendation: Recommend the project delivery method you would use based on your research.

Justification: Provide a clear explanation for your recommendation. Highlight why this method is the most suitable given the context, considering the advantages, disadvantages, and trends discussed.
