Plate Tectonics Discussion: Share your comments & also make your comments on others ideas.
Obviously, the results of plate tectonics creates human pain, suffering & death. Plate tectonics have existed on Earth well before humans were around.
Could God have created Earth without the harmful aspects of plate tectonics? but at what cost? If we remove plate tectonics, what else have we lost?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of having an Earth with plate tectonics for us humans? – Think in terms of the needs of human civilizations (magnetic field, climate, surface temperatures, natural resources).
Of all the worlds yet discovered, ours is the only one confirmed to have plate tectonics. In fact, plate tectonics may have started with the Mars size planet (Theia) that collied with Earth about 4.5 bya and eventually formed our moon.
Why would God want plate tectonics to occur on Earth?
Can you relate this to Colossians 1:15-17? What are the blessings and what are our responsibilities as God’s care-takers for the planet?

To say God couldn’t have created the Earth without the harmful aspects of plate tectonics because that would limit God and the only limit God has is that he can’t sin. However, imagining a world without the harmful aspects poses some interesting questions. Such as, would volcanoes cease to exist all together or would they no longer destroy civilization or kill people? If we entirely remove plate tectonics, our world becomes stagnant. New mountains, ocean ridges, islands, and volcanoes can no longer be formed, meaning that once a mountain became eroded it would cease to exist again, even if it was along a convergent boundary.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of having an Earth with plate tectonics for us humans? – Think in terms of the needs of human civilizations (magnetic field, climate, surface temperatures, natural resources).
The disadvantages of an Earth with plate tectonics is the obvious destruction of our buildings and cities from volcanoes and earthquakes, along with mudslides, landslides, tsunamis, and other side effects of earthquakes. All of these geological events lead to deaths and physical destruction. Although mountains are pretty, they deflect warmer air into cooler climates, thus warming them up. On the other hand, plate tectonics can create oil and gas as well as spread out other minerals. Thus, the natural resources we tend to think are limited are being reproduced even though it may take millions of years.
Why would God want plate tectonics to occur on Earth?
I think a good reason God would want plate tectonics to occur on Earth would be to remind us that nothing is forever. The life we have is so short, sometimes we need a reminder that the life we build up for ourselves isn’t necessarily what God has for us but also that this life isn’t forever because God has something better for us in heaven. On top of that, it helps sustain our planet and our current way of life. With converging plate boundaries, it ensures that mountains will never fully erode away and that natural resources will never run out.
Can you relate this to Colossians 1:15-17? What are the blessings and what are our responsibilities as God’s care-takers for the planet?
Yes I can relate this to Colossians 2:15-17 because plate tectonics are part of the world we can’t see, but we can see their results like mountains and valleys. Some blessings are the beauty of nature that God has given us to look at. Between lakes, mountains, hot springs, and rivers, God reminds us of his care for us and the things around us daily. Our responsibility is to be good stewards of what God has given us. That means protecting the planet and the animals around us as well as not overusing the materials he’s given us.

1.Could God have created Earth without the harmful aspects of plate tectonics? but at what cost? If we remove plate tectonics, what else have we lost?
We are living in God’s beautiful creation! He chose to design our planet the way He did because He believed it was the best way for us to live and enjoy what He sought for us. Earth’s mantle and core would be non-existent without plate tectonics. No plate tectonics means we have no magnetic field, which makes us very vulnerable to violent UV rays. Our earth would be an entirely different planet due to such a drastic change.
2.What are the advantages and disadvantages of having an Earth with plate tectonics for us humans? – Think in terms of the needs of human civilizations (magnetic field, climate, surface temperatures, natural resources).
Advantages of having plate tectonics would be keeping us safe from the violent UV rays due to plate tectonics being super important to generating a magnetic field.
Disadvantage is that plate tectonics can lead to earthquakes and more natural phenomena due to them shifting and moving causing them to deform. It can also lead to stress buildup and friction.
3.Why would God want plate tectonics to occur on Earth?
God wanted us to live in a world where all life is sustainable, plate tectonics help our planet although there are some things that happen such as natural disasters but majority of good comes with some bad. \
4.Can you relate this to Colossians 1:15-17? What are the blessings and what are our responsibilities as God’s care-takers for the planet?
Colossians 1:15-17 just reflects on His creation and that all was done through Him. Everything has created was done for a reason as it “holds all things together.” We should put great care into our planet by doing what is right for it such as keeping it clean.
