Read this chapter and annotate it using the instructions below.
Description
Reasons to annotate an article or text:
– to locate and emphasize main ideas and important information
– indicate how the information and/or arguments are being outlined
– note any questions/terms to clarify/define for better understanding
– note any connections to your lecture material
– record any thoughts/reflections of your own
Steps:
1. Survey/Skim the reading: Note the source of the article (author, publisher, etc.). If there is an abstract or introduction, read both this and the conclusion during this first step. Also make note of pictures, graphs, or diagrams and their captions.
2. Read: Paying special attention to subheadings and main idea(s).
3. Mark: Underline or highlight subheadings and main idea(s), as well as the evidence which supports these and the main argument/thesis. Mark any words you don’t understand, and write any questions you have. Also make note of any reactions to the information or any opportunities to connect it to lecture material (terms, graphs, examples, etc.).
4. Synthesize: At the end of each section of the article, summarize what you just read in your own words.
