Discussion 1
1. Please say if you were absent before completing this part of your post. Based on what we have seen so far, what do you find most surprising, shocking, or disturbing, and why? What had the greatest impact on you? Be specific and explain your answers. Is there a solution to overcome the issue you explored? If you need to process more deeply with me, do the In-class Deeper Reflection Journal in the module.
- I was in class! The things I found most surprising, shocking, or disturbing was when we watched the 2 videos on ageism & disability & ableism. Both of these videos had a big impact on me because for the first one, ageism is something we see everyday. I grew up with my grandparents and thankfully I never had to see them deal with ageism. I feel now that my grandpa has pasted and it’s just my grandma, brother, and I; I can see it more now. She sometimes talks about getting a job and like thinks that nobody will hire her because of her age. I feel in the world we live in today; we need to start giving more opportunities to all both young and older generations in the workplace. Most places will not hire you if you are too young/ they don’t feel you have as much experience as the next person that might… and same with the older generation. They also will look at them & immediately not even think about giving them a chance, just because they feel it might even be a “liability” because they could hurt themselves easier than others… then maybe we need to accommodate to their needs as well. I feel the only solution is to give people a chance… and obviously if they are terrible at the job then you can get rid of them but realistically most of them time these people are genuinely good at what they do & have passion or just hard work ethic & will most likely be the best worker you could’ve hired. I just say give people a chance!
Part 2
Below is an older Fenty Beauty ad campaign for inclusive marketing that includes, “Beauty for All.” However, is it truly “beauty for all?” Analyze the ad based on what was covered in class today and throughout the quarter.
- I feel this AD is off to a good start with trying to be “beauty for all”; they are making sure to add in every race/ ethnicity, but they are lacking inclusivity in a few other ways.
Is anyone not represented?
- Different generations, not just one.
- People who have different disabilities
- All genders; not only women
Do these women all have common qualities that may exclude others? If so, what are they?
- I feel all these women are really beautiful in their own way; each looks different but has also similar qualities. I’m not sure how to really explain that in text…. but I just feel looking at the AD over & over you start to realize many of the models have similar features (almost like the everyday social media beauty standards), they need to make it feel more “real” and “natural”; they need more inclusivity of all people.
Does this ad still offer a limited version of “beauty?” If so, explain.
- I feel this AD offers a limited version of beauty because not everyone looks like the people we are seeing throughout this AD. Yes, they did an excellent job on being inclusive within race & ethnicity, they just need to work on being inclusive to everyone else!<3
Fenty Beauty is off to a good start, but how could it be improved to be more inclusive?
- Add different generations who would choose to wear Fenty Beauty, people who have disabilities would absolutely love to be apart of this AD/ campaign, and even other genders. I feel whoever represents, supports, and purchases from Fenty Beauty, should be apart of other AD’s / campaigns in the future.
Part 3
Finish Watching the videos we didn’t get to in class. Write a response to them.
- Anti-discrimination Laws in the workplace; I watched this video at home and I found it really interesting when she said that they tend to not hire smokers anymore because of smell, smoke breaks, and health risk issues. I feel this is an interesting take on smokers… In my opinion I’ve worked in multiple different restaurants and I feel when my employees need to continuously take smoke breaks while we are either busy, trying to close, or just needing to get specific things finished, it tends to be really annoying for the rest of the employees who do not smoke. I remember when my cooks would take smoke breaks and I would go back into the kitchen to realize only 1 person was working while the rest would be taking a “smoke break” which was always frustrating because it would affect my job as well; making things much harder for me. I am just sharing my experience; but I do understand when taking a smoke break is necessary, I just feel in the workplace they need to not completely ban smoking, but at least make it a rule to only do it on specific times.
- When Mona started talking about some workplaces wanting to check into your social media before hiring you and if you choose to say no then they will think it’s suspicious. This is something I have heard of but never experienced myself. I feel this is kinda an interesting topic because realistically I think it is okay for them to look into your social media but I feel to a certain extent… I don’t think it’s fair to be judged on if you party or drink or whatever… but it makes sense to look into peoples backgrounds to see if they are maybe racist… or harmful.. or maybe doing really bad things.. like being a pedofile… Then yes, looking into people social media seems like a valid reason because most people most their true selves on their social medias.. and it’s best for the workplace to know who they are hiring before they hire.
- I personally have a business social media & a personal social media, for this exact reason. I like to be able to hid my personal life from the world and let people see my business life instead. This wasn’t until I was finally older & realized how much I genuinely enjoy my space and I love to be as professional as I can; especially since I am about to be 26, I need to make sure I am as professional as I can be!

What is your cause?
- My cause is sustainability within the fashion world. Up-cycling, reusing, and creating something completely new, unique, and innovative! I feel this is a major issue within the world because of how the fast fashion industry is polluting our Oceans and causing many issues; like micro plastics and other toxic chemicals getting into our Oceans. I feel this is a HUGE issue and needs to actually be addressed hopefully soon by the fashion industry. Brands would benefits way more by becoming sustainable and reusing old clothing that is READY for a NEW LIFE!!
What are you doing now to support the cause?
- Right now I have created my own brand in 2020 called Rosey Spice. I make a lot of sustainable pieces; reusing unwanted clothing items from my closet that need to be improved into something brand new!
- I am also interning for a self-made sustainable designer who FULLY makes sustainable clothing pieces for his brand. His name is Justin Mensinger. He is very passionate about sustainability and the environment which is something I look up too; creating only garments that are made to last and not just fall apart or become “unwanted”. These are statement pieces that represent sustainability and show people an article of clothing isn’t just something that goes onto your body; it is art.
- Trying my best to tell people about up-cycling as much as possible!!!
How can you increase your engagement in the movement?
- I feel I can increase my engagement within the sustainability movement within the fashion world because I am a designer myself and I strive for the fashion industry to be sustainable. WE ARE HURTING OUT PLANET with fashion sadly…… if we could result to sustainable fashion then MAYBE, things would be different. People would actually think about consumption.
What do you hope to achieve?
- I hope to achieve success within my brand by showing people how sustainability can be just as cool as designer brands. This will help show people helping the environment is much more important than the price of something that is considered “Cool” and a “statement piece”.
Part 2
Watch 1 of the videos on activists in the module and research a current activist who is making a difference in a cause that means something to you. Describe his/her/their activism and contributions.
Like I said above, I am interning for a self-made fashion designer who I truly believe is an activist in many different ways; for both sustainability and mental health. His father passed away to suicide so he is a huge activist on mental health issues for everyone but mainly for men because men truly deal with mental health issues so much on a daily basis but don’t ever let their feelings show/ emotions. He shows this throughout his designs as well. He creates sustainable pieces with not just the message of sustainability but also the message of mental health awareness; which is something I truly look up too. He contributed to the community by doing special collaborations with mental health awareness brands that promote mental health issues and things we can all do to help it. People see Justin not just as a designer, but as a personable person who truly understands the struggles of mental health and sustainability.
