Scenario 2: Longing for Home

1(b) Imagine the following scenario:
A social worker has just received a referral for a new client who is a Petty Officer First Class at the local naval base. According to the referral paperwork, the client has been fighting frequently with his partner and drinking heavily and the partner has threatened to leave him unless he addresses his mental health. The client told the intake coordinator that he doesn’t really want to participate in therapy but is willing to try a few sessions to save his marriage.
Post
- Explain why a service member or veteran might be reluctant to participate in therapy. Be sure to describe both individual and systemic factors in your response.
- Describe the engagement skills a social worker could use to build rapport and encourage reluctant clients to invest in therapy and explain how each one could be beneficial in clinical practice.
- Describe a set of action steps a social worker can take to prepare for an initial session with a reluctant client.
