Scenario: As an intern in the communications department of X organization (choose an NGO, a trade mission) you have been asked to write an article/ create a small booklet about the importance of social, company and state protocol when dealing with international assignments. In particular you have been asked to address the following contents:

1. DEFINITIONS: What is the difference between protocol, etiquette and manners? Define and give examples of company/state/diplomatic protocol and protocol breaches and discuss why this is important.

2. THEORY AND PROTOCOL:

Use theory of power distance, of high and low context, to help readers understand different protocols in different countries. Give at least two examples.

Use the theory of neutral v affective and the theory of ascribed vs achieved status to help the audience understand different protocols for nonverbal behavior in different countries. Give examples.

3. MEETINGS AND DECISION MAKING

Discuss how knowledge about how meetings are run and decisions made help understand different protocols in different countries. Give at least two examples. Discuss also how knowledge about how decisions are made help us to understand different protocols in different countries. Give at least two examples.

4. Discussion, Conclusions and Recommendations
