Baronov’s positivism and Stack and Gundlach’s work on country music and suicide

Please answer the following questions in a couple of sentences each:

1. For the first reading, Baronov’s excerpts on positivism:

Baronov explains that the basic goal of positivism was to transfer the approaches of the physical sciences over to investigating the social world. What is your gut-level reaction to this idea? Can you think of any reasons why this would be a useful thing to do? What about any challenges that might arise in trying to do it?

2. For the second reading, Stack and Gundlach’s work on country music and suicide:

The authors were interested in finding out if there was a link between two variables: country music airtime and suicide rates. What factors did they feel they needed to control for in order to avoid their results being skewed? Why did they suspect these factors might skew their results if not controlled for?
