Instructions: In a 6-8 page Mission Command Paper, Students will analyze a commander’s performance in a pre-approved historical battle, evaluating that commander’s execution of 4 out of the 7 Mission Command Principles: Competence, Mutual Trust, Shared Understanding, Commander’s Intent, Disciplined Initiative, Mission Orders, and Risk Acceptance. Students must consider and take a stance on how the commander’s successful or unsuccessful use of the mission command principle influenced the battle’s outcome. Summary of the battle should be very brief so as to privilege the doctrinal analysis over telling the story of the battle. Students must conduct thorough research to include a minimum of 4 scholarly sources (books and/or articles). Use of primary texts is highly encouraged. Cite all sources according to Chicago/Turabian style (endnotes and bibliography).

Ø Paper: Must be between 6 and 8 pages in length (note that 5 ½ does not equal 6)

Ø Introduction

Ø Short summary of events leading to the battle, its outcome, and a thesis that ties mission command to that outcome

Ø Your introductory paragraph should contain a thesis statement and be concise

Ø Body

Ø Analysis of the commander’s performance in 4 of the 7 principles of mission command

Ø Emphasis of this assignment should be on mission command analysis, not a re-telling of the battle.

Ø Conclusion: Impact of mission command on the battle’s outcome, and the significance of your analysis to commanders today

Ø Endnotes & Bibliography
