Consumer Behavior Essay Questions

For the essay questions, responses should include examples (from in class or in your own experience), and should be between 500-750 words each (you will not get penalized for longer responses—but you may get penalized for shorter than 500 word responses). These questions are not intended to be tricky and so you should have a good shot at doing well here—if you are thoughtful and detailed.

  1. What is the underlying motivation to reflect on the past growth in communication technology? Use some examples to explain.
  2. Following the 2016 presidential elections, there has been increased scrutiny placed on all information from the internet—and not just in politics. In this course, I recommend that people (and you, the student) be skeptical without getting cynical in terms of information consumed. An important step in this process includes doing your own research to determine if something is true or false, or to place the information in the correct context. Based on the information provided in this class and your own personal/professional experience with marketing and the internet, what is an effective strategy to think critically about information you get from the internet without falling into the “everything is a conspiracy” trap?
  3. Use examples and explain in detail how the fragmenting of media, the frugality of customers, and other considerations presented in the discussions in the class are impacting consumer power. Further, who do you think has more power—firms or consumers (please explain)?
  4. Consider the following statement: “One size fits all” strategies are very effective when employing new-media marketing tools to firm’s broader marketing plan. Given your experience inside and outside of the class, do you agree or disagree with this statement? Please explain using examples.
