Learning Objective: The specific learning objectives for this unit is to describe what it means to use the sociological perspective, distinguish between different approaches to sociological theory. Your instructions for this Data Workshop is to immerse yourself in the celebrity or major news outlets. Discuss and explain how three theoretical perspectives structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic Interactionalism can be applied. You will want to include specific examples from your chosen stories to illustrate your points. Did the theories overlap at all, or do they contradict each other? Was there anyone theory you felt did a better or worse job of explaining your story? For instance, analyze a story from a celebrity gossip outlet such as TMZ, Extra, or Entertainment Tonight. Select a story and apply one of the three perspectives and discuss how conflict theory applies to the as a scenario. Another example would be to research a story from a major news outlet; ABC, CNN, FOX News, your choice select a story topic which could include but not limited to, social movements like Antifa, Black Lives Matter, Detroit Will Breath etc. Then, explain how each theoretical perspective that is, Structural Functionalism, Conflict Theory, and Symbolic Interactionalism can be applied to your selected story. Essentially, you are completing the DO-ITYOURSELF (see bottom of page 31) assignment from the book with the added inclusion of news media outlets.
