Essay Prompt

In this short essay, you will be expected to compare and contrast the position of the two theorists listed in the respective prompt you choose. This is an analytical paper; the expectation is that you engage with the readings to find the parallels and distinctions concerning the ideas of each theorist for the respective topic.

Select one of the following three prompts:
1)Marx and Weber on “ideology.” Both Marx and Weber pay attention to the role of history to explain how societies change over time – specially to explore how modern society emerged. However, the two theorists have a very different view about the historical significance of “ideas” as forces for social change. Drawing from the readings, compare and contrast their position on this topic.
2)Marx and Durkheim on “social solidarity.” Both Marx and Durkheim wrote in detail about the factors that have historically served to either maintain or destroy social solidarity in modern society. Drawing from the readings, compare and contrast Marx and Durkheim’s thoughts about the sources of social solidarity, or lack-there-of, in modern society.
3)Marx and Freud on “human aggression.” For this topic, consider the following question: What are Marx and Freud’s views on the causes of human aggression, conflict and violence? How does each respective theorist believe the reality of aggression and conflict ought to be confronted?
