Discussion 4 References and Testing
Description
This week’s discussion has four parts. Remember to number and answer each part separately.
1. You were Mr. Chaplin’s supervisor for the period shown in the Modern Times video listed below. Mr. Chaplin is looking to make a career change and has applied for the entry-level position for the career path you have covered in previous discussions. He has asked you for a letter of recommendation. Based on the work sample shown in the Modern Times video, you will write a letter of recommendation using appropriate job-related characteristics in the Aamodt text. (Hint: required readings, keywords, page numbers).
Your review should reflect an honest appraisal of Mr. Chaplin’s fitness for the entry-level position in the career path discussed in your first three discussions. For this letter, you will assume that you will be held legally responsible by both Mr. Chaplin and your firm for 1) stating any false or misleading information about Mr. Chaplin, 2) failing to include information relevant to the hiring decision.
Your letter of recommendation should be less than one single-spaced page with one-inch margins using a size 11 or 12 font. (In other words, keep it short). Please make an honest reference based on the work sample you are observing, relating it to the first-day tasks and KSAs you identified in previous discussions. Remember that predictions of future job performance must be based on the behavior you observed while he was under your supervision.
You can find the website for Mr. Chaplin’s work sample by searching the web for modern times factory scenes. The factory scene and the full movie are available on YouTube. The following URL works in Mexico, where I live. It may not work in other localities.

2. (Optional). A Russian film made in 1929 documenting “modern times” in a Russian city can be found at:
Man with a Movie Camera (1929) movie (Links to an external site.)
Man with a Movie Camera is a silent film. You will not need to be able to read or understand Russian. Anyone wishing to earn a bonus point may do so by writing a short review comparing “Modern Times” with the Russian “Man with a Camera.” How did the two films compare life in a modern city and the industrial revolution? How would these two views affect/reflect human resource practices?
3. You are now the personnel representative who is considering hiring Mr. Chaplin into the entry-level position of the career path you described in previous postings.
Expand the entry-level KSAs you posted last week and evaluate Mr. Chaplin on each. Explain why each instrument was chosen to measure a specific KSA. Defend the reliability and validity of the evaluation and explain any limitations on reliability and validity that may exist.
You may want to look at previous discussions for examples of how other students have formatted the KSAs. The easiest way to complete this assignment would be to add information to the format used in previous discussions.
4. Select a personnel issue from either the text or the work sample and discuss it. Remember to cite sources (text, materials, original research, etc.) so that another student can find them. There are several issues and key terms that might be discussed from different points of view. For example, validity generalization – does the work sample presented carry over to your job requirements? The clip also shows possible labor-management differences. Remember that your task is to present both sides of an issue fairly enough so that both sides would agree with your description of their attitudes and behavior – and then draw your own conclusion with the basis for it. You will be graded using the discussion participation rubric.
5a. What did you learn from this assignment?
5b. How can this assignment be improved?
Your substantive posting, including the letter of recommendation, should be less than three double-spaced pages with one-inch margins using a size 11 or 12 font. (Once, again, keep it short).
