Course title and section: Management Applications in Fire Protection

Course Description:
Theory and practice of public management applied to fire protection. Examination of organizational structure and command, personnel development and management, budgeting and fiscal management, and management systems and techniques within the context of contemporary fire protection management. Assessment of policy development and advocacy by fire protection administrators in the political and private sector.
The course will mirror the text, and any current events in the local newspapers, links will be provided for these items. Periodically, I will post written homework assignments.
These assignments may be from the text readings, or from the supplemental readings
that we undertake.

Learning outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Students will test and identify the core mechanism of fire safety management in both the private and public sector.
2. Students will categorize and catalogue fire and emergency management in accord with public, legal and legislative policy.
3. Students will evaluate various fire and emergency management strategies.
4. Students will define and diagnose fire safety management content for disseminations to the public in coherent and clear language.
5. Students will compose and compile data, documents and reports essential to emergency management, mission and purpose.

Requirements/Course policies:
Quizzes: 700pts
There will be four quizzes/exams. Each will be worth 175 points and will correspond to the section of the text.

Homework/Assignments: 400 points
Homework will be assigned weekly. The assignments will be posted and submitted via the appropriate drop box. Homework assignments will be made posted in the assignments section of the course and you will be notified via the announcements page of the course that the assignment has been issued. All assignments must be submitted through the course dropbox. I will not accept homework/assignments via email.

Class Participation: 100 points
This includes discussions in the classroom. In order to achieve these points, you must be active in the classroom.

Final Exam: 150 points
Comprehensive final exam covering all topics discussed, reviewed and contained within the textbook. See course calendar for date.
Term Paper: 150 points

The term paper/Alternative assignment is due December 01, 2020. They may be submitted EARLIER. I will not accept late papers or papers that are not in the proper format as identified in the term paper assignment document. If the term paper is not submitted by the due date you will be awarded an “F” for the semester.

Grading:
There will be a total of 1,500 pts. are available to earn for this class. The grade that you receive will be determined by dividing the points earned by the total points available to earn. I.e. The student earns 1353pts. 1353/1500=.902. The student will earn an A- for the semester.
