What kind of class divides do you see in the US today?
In the US today, there are much class divides to discuss. We have the race divide, which can be anything, black, white, yellow, brown, tan. We have an ethnic range, which is based on what nationality someone has. For example, some people may be of the Caribbean descent and specifically Jamaican but speak a different language than someone from the Caribbean but specifically the Dominican Republic and speak Spanish. We have gender divides, who consider birth gender yet identify as another gender. We also have Male and Females, Democratic and Republican divides.
How are race, gender, ethnicity, and other variables covered in the class related to class?
Race, gender, and ethnicity covered in this class help me understand where the divide began. When I read the chapters, I know the bias behavior exhibited throughout the US and beyond. The article by Miner “Body Ritual among the Nacirema” gave me a glimpse of what an etic perspective could be on American people. The chapters in the book by Crapo, “Cultural Anthropology,” gave me a better understanding of other cultures and how beliefs can be opposite to my ideas. The study of groups from an insider and outsider’s perspective makes it easier to understand our cultural differences.
How do different economic classes view each other, according to the two articles you read for this discussion? Do you agree with the authors of these articles? Support your position with information from credible sources.
I have learned that stereotyping and prejudice can lead to a decrease in inter-mingling; people may not believe they are rich enough or smart enough to mingle with richer crowds (Hutson, 2014). We are at a divide, and “we fall into a trap of turning against each other” (Abdul-Jabbar, 2014). Unfortunately, we can separate each other by the black, the white, the male, the female, the rich, or the poor instead of making the world a better place.
