HSC464 ETHICAL, LEGAL, & POLICY CONSIDERATIONS LETTER
Description
M8A1: Ethical and Legal Considerations – Letter to the Editor
To address any issue in an organization or community, it is crucial to evaluate ethical, legal, and public policy concerns and any proposed solutions. One of the ways in which these concerns may be communicated to wide audiences is through a letter to the editor of a newspaper of your choice or to a relevant professional organization newsletter.
Specifically, you will select an ethical, legal, or public policy concern related to your case and will write a letter to the editor. You can choose to write a letter to the editor of a newspaper or to a professional organization newsletter. Your letter should follow the professional conventions of editorial letters. Please identify the target newspaper or organization you would send this letter to. Please see the How to Write a Letter to the Editor: Turning Passion into Action

[DOC file, 78 KB] resource.
In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following BHS program outcomes:
PO5: Use effective professional communication skills to engage with various stakeholders.
PO6: Analyze legal, ethical and policy issues within health delivery systems
In your letter to the editor, address the following:
Describe the ethical, legal, or public policy issue related to the problem you are addressing. Be specific.
Describe your position, and identify an opposing perspective to the issue.
What is at risk if the issue is ignored?
How do you propose this ethical, legal, or public policy issue be addressed?
Your letter should be 1-2 pages using APA style and adhering to editorial letter format. Use references from your portfolio (and other sources to supplement your portfolio as needed) to support your points.
Context for Assignments
As a part of your capstone experience, you will view a video depicting a case scenario commonly experienced by organizations and clientele in your chosen profession/emphasis. This case scenario will form the foundation for your assignments over the term. You will submit your emphasis to your instructor at the end of the first week. Your instructor will then send you the link to the video scenario, along with a portfolio of information related to the issues addressed in the video. As the video will describe, you will assume the role of a new employee at an organization related to your emphasis studies. The video narrator will be in the role of your new supervisor.
You will view the video, which describes a situation and several challenges facing organization and/or community. At the end of the video, you will be given a charge – a problem you are tasked to research and recommend solutions for.
In many organizations, new employees are not given options on what problems to address first; they are given a problem to tackle first. That is the case here. As you go forward with each assignment, your responses must all focus on the case scenario and the problem you have been tasked to address. In this way, you will demonstrate the skills and knowledge you have attained through your time in SHS by addressing an issue or problem common in your chosen field.
Hello – as a reminder, the assignments for this Capstone course will be based on a video depicting a case scenario, as well as a portfolio of information related to the issues addressed in the video. Be sure to read each assignment description carefully and review the rubrics for each one as well.
