As you engage with this week’s discussion and with one another, be sure to read what has already been posted and then add substantively to the discussion. Time goes quickly, so post early in the week. We will go through each question one at a time together, discussing each one until we are ready to move on to the next question as a class. I will assist you in moving through the questions.
The first question in this discussion is opinion and experience-based, so you can begin immediately.
Think about your health sciences emphasis and your perception of ethical behavior as a member of your chosen profession. In 2-3 sentences, describe your personal code of ethics and commitment to ethics in your profession. Share how you chose this personal code of ethics.
As the week progresses, please check back to discuss your and your classmates’ personal ethical codes.
Now, read the representative codes of ethics, your assigned reading for this module. After you have read the material, please meaningfully apply it to discuss the following questions:
As you reviewed the ethical codes in your readings, what theme(s) struck you as especially important or significant? Talk about similarities and differences in themes being addressed in the ongoing discussion.
In past modules, we have talked about Internet-based health information. Now, let’s consider the codes of ethics in relation to information-gathering on the Internet and the role of social media. How well do these codes of ethics address the unique characteristics of the online environment? What new ethical considerations arise?
As a health professional in your field of emphasis, if you face an ethical question or dilemma, where would you turn for guidance? What informal and formal resources would you access? (Provide direct links or citations to formal resources.) Why these resources?
Consult the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to make your initial post, click on “Reply.” Then copy/paste the text into the message field, and click “Post Reply.”
To respond to a peer, click “Reply” beneath her or his post and continue as with an initial post.
This discussion will be graded using the SHS Discussion rubric. Please review this rubric prior to beginning the discussion. You can view the rubric on the Course Rubrics page within the Start Here module. All discussions combined are worth 25% of your final course grade.
