Maintaining racial inequality through crime control: mass incarceration and residential segregation

Description

Questions:

A) Make a list of 7 to 10 important keywords or short phrases whose definitions you believe are essential for a deep understanding of the article. You do not have to know a precise definition of all the words, just a belief that you as the reader will need to know what the words mean. Examples of keywords from the introduction: racial ordering, durable racial inequality, white accumulation, etc.

B) Define one of the words in 2 to 5 sentences, using information from the article, or an outside source.

Create an outline (in outline format) of the article that includes the title, author’s name, abstract, introduction, and all the specific headings and subheadings. Pick one of the headings or subheadings in the outline and write a 3 to 7 sentence summarization of the main point of the section according to your reading of the section/subsection.
List three of the sources Smith references the most in the text of the article. You will explore one of the sources in Week 4.
There are three longer quotations that Smith chooses to highlight in this article (on 477, 479, and 480). Choose one of the quotations, type it out, and provide a brief analysis of how the quotation adds to the section in which it is included. For example, in what ways does the quotation substantiate the main claim of the paragraph or section? What might be lost for the reader if this quotation had NOT been included? In what ways does the quotation illuminate the content of the article for you?
