Minor Assignment

Today we’re talking about sources in general and why you should be careful when evaluating them.

(This will have more relevance in future major assignments since the only sources you really need for your first essay are your genre examples, but nevertheless it’s good to go over it early). Information is so fast paced and readily available that even ‘journalists’ get fooled by fake/bad sources (Example: https://www.networkworld.com/article/2198816/the-10-biggest-hoaxes-in-wikipedia-s-first-10-years.html)

Anyway, read Chapter 12 in your Bedford book of genres on evaluating sources (you can do this either before or after you complete the minor assignment.)

1. Watch this video. (A fun, sort of tangential demonstration about how easy it is to fool others).

2. Write a 10-15 sentence response. Why was he successful? (Familiarity with the fancy restaurant genre? How is that demonstrated?) How does the exemplify modern media? (Vary your sentence length and type, read it out loud to yourself. Experiment with your style in these responses.)
