My Journey to Literacy
Description
When most people hear the word “literacy,” they automatically think about reading and writing. However, literacy also means to have a good understanding about a subject. You can be literate in math, music, computers, or other subject areas. You might be literate in several areas. For this assignment, you will tell how you became literate in one specific area for your narrative.
A narrative is a story, which you are the main character and you are telling the story from your point of view. (I-centered story) In this story, you will be discussing previous events and people in your life that helped you in obtaining this area of literacy.
Some questions to consider in writing this narrative: What area of literacy is most important to you and why? What events led to you becoming literate in this area? Why are those events significant? Is there anyone else who helped you along the way in obtaining this literacy? What did they do and why was that important? What were your struggles and how did you overcome them to obtain this literacy?
Some things to keep in mind:
You will need to have a thesis statement. A thesis statement is a sentence that expresses the main idea of your whole narrative. It’s your claim. By the end of the first paragraph of this assignment, your reader should know your area of literacy and why it is important to you.
You are not telling your whole entire life story. You are telling events of your life that are relevant to you obtaining this area of literacy.
You want your story to be detailed and very descriptive. You want your audience to be engaged when they read your story. Remember, your audience does not know you personally, so you need to provide enough details, so they know a little bit more about you and what matters to you.
Remember, this is a story and it should flow like one. Some stories are told in chronological order but sometimes they are not. Either way works if your reader can follow along and not get totally confused.
