Charging Interest – Reflection Paper
The term “Usury” simple means charging interest on money lent over time. In the U.S., usury is considered acceptable practice, and even encourage for business to grow more quickly. However, in other cultures usury is prohibited and seen as predatory. Many biblical references decry the practice of usury, particularly between His people
• Write a 2 to 3-page paper, formatted double-spaced and 12-point font
• No title page is needed or desired
• A reference page, which is not included in the 2 to 3-pages
• The first page should by a synopsis of the student viewpoints during the in-class discussion (student names are not required nor desired).
The paper must state your beliefs, supported by referenced material, on the practice of usury. For example:
• Are you against lending in any form which includes the charging of interest?
• Do you have a limit on the amount of interest that should be charged? If so, how much and why that amount?
• Do you believe interest should be charged at whatever the market will bear?
• Should there be debt forgiveness, and if so, how would it be determined and applied?
Your paper should lay out a cogent argument that you would apply to society at large, remembering that this includes you and your family. You must cite at least two(2) references which support your argument, one of which may be from scripture.
