Read the introduction to biopolitics. This is a concept by Foucault, but the definition is explained by someone else in short paper form. I put helpful/central passages in bold font. Look up words you don’t know and bring all your questions to class. When the text talks about ‘power,’ it means forms of governmental power or institutions (laws or rules in states, schools, hospitals, prisons, etc.). We will figure out the details together in class, but for your post formulate in your own words what biopolitics means, and describe it a bit more with the help of an example of your choice.

this week’s presentation, transplant tourism. Does a person in need of an organ transplant have a moral right to obtain that transplant, supposing the availability of the needed organ? Which of the 6 acceptable ethical theories would support this and how would you apply it?

Is traveling for medical treatment (organ transplants, dental work, knee replacement, surgery, or even plastic surgery) ethical? When would it be unethical to participate in medical tourism?

In the scenario assignments, you are asked to reflect on responses to the presented scenario. It should not just be writing down your first reaction or what you already know.

Reflection involves critical thinking, which means rethinking your existing knowledge and previously held opinions in light of what we have learned about theories of ethics, logic, and reasoning. You will need to question your current knowledge and beliefs.

Discuss the main points of the debate, what stance you take, support that stance, and discuss the opposing argument. Also discuss an ethical theory that would apply to defend your view.

To complete each scenario assignment:

Compose your reflection in a Word document and be sure to address, at a minimum, the following questions:

Why do you feel the way you do about the issue presented?

Of the four responses offered in the scenario, which do you think is the most ethical and why?

Support your conclusions with evidence and specific examples from the textbook, including a minimum of one theory of ethics to defend your stance.

Your reflection must be 1-2 pages in length and follow APA formatting and citation guidelines as appropriate, making sure to cite at least two sources.

How do you define medical privacy?

Family Interview Assignment (50 points)

This assignment is intended to help you gain a new perspective of family life from someone who grew up differently than you. To complete this assignment you need to do the following.

Choose an individual, couple or family who has a family background that is different from yours or who is at a different stage of family life than you. (Examples include: cohabiting couple, empty nest couple, single parent family, newlywed couple, new parents, adoptive parents, grandparents raising grandchildren, aunt and uncle raising nieces and nephews, families with a disabled child or parent, etc.).

Create a list of at least 10 questions that will help you learn about how the family functions including questions about family rules (implicit and explicit rules), roles (who does what in the family, what type of gender roles), boundaries (was there a clear boundary between parents and children), hierarchy, family structure (how is the family set up), family challenges unique to the situation, etc. (you will hand in this typed up list with your paper)

Set up a time with the individuals or families to spend 45 minutes to an hour interviewing them about their family life. I know this may seem like a great length of time however you need to learn and get to know how this family functions.

Take notes during the interview or record the interview.

Complete a written analysis of what you learned from the interview. I do not want a transcript of the interview. I want you to describe aspects of family life for this family as it relates to relevant course content from the textbook and/or course lecture. The paper should not be a story that describes this family’s life, or a description of the interview process. You should write what you learned about this family in relation to course content, and how that family is similar or different to your own family of origin in terms of course content. Your analysis should be 4-5 pages, not including your title page or reference page if needed. APA examples and resources are posted on D2L for you to review.

Please include, on a separate sheet attached to the analysis, the list of 10 questions you developed and asked during the interview (typed).

You will need to submit your completed Family Interview Assignment to a drop box on D2L by 11:59 PM on the due date.

Neil, a 70-year-old man, lives alone at his house in a suburban area.  His wife died a year ago. He doesn’t have many friends; his wife was his primary confidante.  His neighbors across the street and next door are friendly, and Neil used to help them with yard projects in his spare time.  Neil’s health has been good, but recently he has had trouble with his teeth.  His diet has been poor, and in the past 3 months, his physical and mental vigor has deteriorated. He has been slowly lapsing into depression, so he keeps the shades drawn and rarely leaves his house. Neil keeps very little food in the house because his wife did most of the cooking and shopping, and he just isn’t interested in food.
