Paper 1 instructions
Magazine Article Rhetorical Analysis
I would like you to select one of the magazine articles that you included in the Research Assignment.
You will then analyze the audience, purpose, ethos, logos, pathos, kairos, and design of that article.
*Refer to the Introction to Rhetorical Analysis document for reminders of each device.
ORGANIZING YOUR ANALYSIS
Intro: Start off your analysis by introducing your article: its title, author, publication date, and the magazine it was published in. Follow that with a summary of the article. Then, transition to your claim (thesis). Your claim is a single statement about the main point of your paper. Since your purpose in writing this paper is to analyze the author’s rhetorical choices, your claim will be something like: Smith utilizes many rhetorical devices to build her argument.
Body: Provide examples of the rhetorical choices the author made in your article. Plan to discuss each rhetorical device in its own paragraph.
*Advice on developing some of your body paragraphs:
For ethos, first provide a quote that is an example of ethos, then explain HOW it helps build either credibility, trust, fairmindedness, etc.
For logos, provide a quote that is an example of logos, then explain HOW it logically persuades the audience to see the author’s main point.
For pathos, provide a quote that is an example of pathos, along with what specific emotion(s) it evokes and HOW evoking that emotion in the audience helps persuade them to see the author’s main point.
For kairos, simply discuss whether the article was written at a particularly appropriate month, year, or season.
Conclusion: In the conclusion, I’d like you to discuss in what way you feel the article could have been strengthened. What could the author have added to make her/his argument stronger? In order to answer that, I’d like you to do some additional research in any of the library databases. Find 1 other article that discusses the same topic or a related one. Recommend one quote from the article and how that quote could have strengthened your main article. For example, perhaps the quote adds much needed logos or fairmindedness to increase its ethos. Provide the quote then explain how exactly it would have strengthened the article. Only cite this article in the conclusion, not in the body of the paper.
MLA: Be sure all research starts with a signal phrase and ends with a parenthetical citation.
Tone: Because this is an academic paper, try to maintain a more formal, objective tone. Avoid use of first person (I think, I feel…) and second person (You should read…)
Pages: 2 Sources: 2 or 3 (main article, 1 database source cited in the conclusion, and maybe a source that helps you determine the target audience of the mag your article was written in [if you aren’t familiar with the publication]).
*Don’t forget article titles go in quotes and magazine and database titles go in italics.
