Essay Assignment 1
Bring 2 copies for peer review on rough draft due date
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to analyze and interpret the element of identity in the essays of Tan, Orwell, Welty and Baldwin, using a minimum of eight outside sources available on the MCC Library databases to support your observations and conclusions. The texts themselves do not count as outside sources.
Definitions: In class we will explore a number of elements of identity such as sex (gender), ethnicity, age, culture, language, jobs, personality, education, geography, and so on.
The task: Focusing on several of those ‘identifiers’ – or others that you discover — compare how at least three of our authors establish their identities and describe how they are content with their identity and how they struggle with it. For example, do they determine their identity from within or do they allow their identity to be determined by other people, other factors. Your paper should draw conclusions – make an argument — not just summarize what the authors said or what outside sources said about them.
Use of research: Use your research to help support the conclusions you make, for information that will help you put the authors and the individual essays in context. Provide a separate Works Cited page with your essay. You should cite at least 8 outside sources.
Length: Your paper should be at least 2,500 words, double spaced using 12 point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, top, bottom and sides.
Revision: You will be able to turn in one revision of your final draft to be re-graded.
