1. Think about the various types of leadership and government in ancient Mesopotamian. How does this change over time? Write an essay about kingdoms controlled or ruled by the priesthood (Sumer), warrior kings (Akkad), and law-giver kings like Hammurabi (Babylon). Compare the three styles and how they were effective for each civilization. How does all of this effect the various social classes? Which type of leadership would you have preferred to live under if you were in ancient Mesopotamia?

2. What was the significance of the Babylonian Captivity? Exactly what happened? What role did the rabbis and priests play in the re-shaping of ancient Jewish society? How does Israel get re-settled and Jerusalem re-built (between 515 and 200 BCE, all prior to Herod the Great).

3. Write about the rise and Fall of the Persian Empire. How did it become the largest empire in the world at that time?

4. Who were the Minoans and the Mycenaens? Write an essay about the two civilizations comparing and contrasting aspects of each (things like government, economy, trade, production, writing, art, and architecture). Obviously there were many differences. What contributions do they make to further the development of Greek society as it evolves into the Classical age?

5. Write about the rise of the polis and the age of Greek colonization (c. 750 to 500 BCE). How does Greece go about establishing control of the Mediterranean? Where is Rome in all of this? Describe the various roles of men and women in Greek society at this time.

6. Write about the Greek war with Persia. How in the world were the Greeks able to resist the mighty Persian Empire? In what ways did they get lucky?
