In this assignment, you will lay a strong foundation for your policy analysis, demonstrating your ability to contextualize and justify the importance of your chosen topic within the broader public health landscape. Remember that the focus is on the topic (for example, adolescent e-cigarette use), not the specific policy (imposing taxes on e-cigarette products).

Instructions

Write a 4-5 page introduction and justification for your policy analysis topic. Your introduction should set the stage for your analysis by providing background information, historical context, and a rationale for why this topic is important to address.

Your introduction and justification should include the following sections:

• Introduction to the Policy Topic.
  • Clearly state the policy topic you have chosen to analyze.
  • Collect and review relevant data and scholarly evidence related to the problem to justify why this is a public health issue.
  • Describe the scope, magnitude, and impact of the problem.
    • Include who is affected, how big the problem is, and what contributes to it.
    • For example: Defining the problem of high teen smoking rates in a community, including factors like availability of cigarettes and peer pressure.
• Historical Context.
  • Discuss the historical background of the issue.
    • When did it first emerge as a public health concern?
  • Highlight significant events, developments, or legislative actions that have shaped the topic over time.
    • For example: Gathering data from local health departments, surveys, and academic studies on successful or unsuccessful smoking cessation programs.
  • Explain how the historical context has influenced current public health practices and policies related to this issue.
• Justification for the Policy Analysis.
  • Explain why this topic is important to analyze.
    • What makes it a critical issue in public health today?
  • Discuss the potential impact of the topic on population health.
    • Consider both positive and negative outcomes.
  • Discuss at least one existing regulation or policy related to the chosen topic.
    • How effective is it?
    • Highlight any gaps or challenges in current policy approaches that your analysis aims to address.
    • If there are no existing regulations or policies, explain why a new policy is necessary and what gaps or challenges exist that current policies do not address.
