Assignment: Produce a brief report (maximum 2 pages, leaving room for maps). Use the EPA Environmental Justice Screening tooland the Urban Heat Island disparity explorer to select a large city of interest. Find evidence of environmental racism and display relevant maps. What kinds of environmental hazards (from the EPA tool and urban heat from the UHI explorer) are certain demographics disproportionately exposed to? Perform online research to find some reason, if even anecdotal, for why. Is there any effort by local government or even local civic groups to solve the problem (i.e., environmental justice commissions or the like)? The brief should include at least one visual (in this case, maps), refer to readings covered this week if/where relevant, and cite the URL of all sources used in the research.
