Description

Skills: The purpose of this assignment is to:

Apply learning from Chapters 3 and 4 to a new situation, creating a visualization of a climate type.

Develop written communication to demonstrate your mastery of concepts.

Learn a skill in data presentation using Google Sheets.

Knowledge: This assignment will help you become familiar with the following important content knowledge in physical geography:

Recognizing that climate is composed of long-term averages in temperature and precipitation;

Understanding that climates can be classified using the Köppen classification system;

Annual and seasonal patterns in temperature and precipitation both affect a climate’s classification.

Task: Use the assigned readings and videos from this Module to create a climograph of an unknown American city. I will post a video on how to use the tool. Classify the climate and use that to make an educated guess about where in the United States this city might be.

Note: This appears as a “quiz” on Canvas so I can have a faster time grading it-but it is not timed and you can open and close the quiz as often as you like, your work will be auto-saved. However, once you hit “submit” the quiz is done, so please make sure you’re really done before you hit “submit”!

Climate data for Question 1 is available once you start the quiz, which you can get started on right now if you like!

Question 1: Create a climograph of the mystery city in Google Sheets and embed it as an answer to the first essay question (up to 15 points). Please do not attach your file, if it is attached instead of embedded there will be an automatic 5 point deduction. Make sure to follow the video instructions to create a quality chart!

Question 2: Classify your climate using the descriptions in our textbook’s section 4.3, explaining how you made your classification in your own words. Your answer should explain your classification decisions clearly and thoroughly. Consider any possible other classifications–for example, you might not be 100% sure about the second or third letter of your Köppen classification.

HINT The criteria for B climates is complicated because it’s based on available moisture. Since I don’t want students to have to deal with that, I chose a location that wasn’t a B climate.

Question 3: Describe what it’s like to live in a place with this climate; what can you expect from season to season? Reference statistics from your climograph in support of your answer. Based on your climate classification and this mapLinks to an external site., where in the United States might this city be? Suggest several possibilities of where we might find this climate type in the United States.
