Description

The purpose of this assignment is to help you develop useful practical skills in critically evaluating your own digital media skills and in using digital media technology. This assignment has two parts and is worth 250 pts, or 25 percent of your final grade.

Description: Your task is to take an inventory of all the digital communication technology that you use in your personal and professional life and analyze three aspects of your interaction with this technology in a written paper. The length should be 7-8 pages for M.A. students. First, explain the usefulness of each technology and whether each one facilitates education, entertainment, or personal communication, such as staying in touch with family and friends or conducting personal business. Second, consider the amount of time you spend using these technologies. Third, consider the effects of each technology on your personal and professional life. Consider how much money you are spending on these technologies and if their use is making you more competent (a better professional) or godlier (a better person). Also, think about the technological displacement these technologies produce in your life. In your paper try and take a neutral stance as much as you can in analyzing your own life and make recommendations for any changes you think you should make in response to your self-analysis. Think about where you fit with regards to the adoption, use and proficiency in digital technology. Are you wanting to increase your own proficiency or not? How are you going about increasing your proficiency? The paper should be referenced according to the APA style manual, 7th edition. M.A. students should have at least 5-6 references and Ph.D. students should have at least 7-8 references. Finally, produce a 3–5-minute video about someaspect of the way you are using communication technology to achieve personal or professional goals. Feel free to be humorous in good taste. Upload your video to YouTube, Rumble, or another video-sharing website and then embed the URL addressinto our CANVAS course in the forum that we have set up for others to see.

Written Paper

Your paper should be written in an academic style following the APA Style Manual. In your paper, you need to integrate your self-assessment with the academic literature. Collect use your own scholarly resources on new technology use. Here is an example.

“I estimate that I send 100 texts a day on my iPhone, which is very close to the national average. A recent study of 450 college students in the U.S. by Fraser & Keeler (2011) indicates that they sent on average 92 text messages each day. In another recently published study of cell phone use, the authors concluded that “text messaging is the preferred mode of communication now among college students in the U.S.” (Mercer, Baker, & Scutero, 2012, p. 113).

I cited two studies using APA style, 7th edition, which is required for all your papers. At the end of your short summary you should then provide a reference page (which does count toward the required page length of your paper), providing references in alphabetical order for each source you cite. Include in your paper a link to your video (see below).

Paper Requirements

M.A. students: 7-8 pages in length (including references), 12-pt Times Roman font, double-spaced, standard margins (one inch), with 5-6 academic references at the end of your paper.
