Sociology Question

Description

  • This assignment is intended to demonstrate your understanding of sex and gender using the course materials and outside sources. You will need to clearly express your analyses and/or critiques of key arguments about sex and gender and apply them to outside contexts.
  • At minimum, this assignment should be 1,500 words, which is around 6 pages double spaced (not including references).
  • You can be creative but will need to define and build on at least 3 key words and/or themes from the course content (i.e. readings, videos, lecture).
  • Your grade will be based on quality of analyses and arguments about course content, rather than length, as well as appropriate and consistent formatting (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc).
  • Please refer to the rubric for a breakdown. Please incorporate an episode of Scooby Doo.

Prompt

  • In this paper, you will apply the concept of queering sex and gender. Queering sex and gender refers to “spoiling”, subverting, rethinking, and/or resisting the dominant social norms and structures of power related to sex and gender, such as dominant binaries, compulsory heterosexuality, homonormativity; toxic masculinity, hegemonic femininity, and or imperial feminism.

Your paper will have two objectives:

  • 1) Using key themes and concepts form the semester, explain how and why you queer sex and/or gender.
    • If you do not, but would like to, explain why and how.
    • If you do not, and do not want to in the future, explain why that is.
    • Make sure to think intersectionally and incorporate how other social categories influence how you queer (or don’t queer) sex and/or gender.
  • 2) Find an organization, collective, public figure, and/or organizer who queers sex and/or gender in ways related to the themes you chose.
    • Explain how they queer sex and/or gender. Does the work they do relate to concepts from the class: explain.
    • What is the history of this organization, collective, public figure, or organizer? How did they get to where they are? What gendered and sexual issues were/ are they responding to?
    • Is this organization intersectional? Explain. If they are not, how can they improve to become more intersectional?
    • Why/ how does the work they do have an impact?
      • Is the impact local and/or global?
