Instructions for Media Assignment
Criminal Justice in the Media Paper and Presentation:
Students are required to examine and present on how the criminal justice system is portrayed in
the media. This assignment calls for a thoughtful analysis of accuracy, context, and potential
biases in various types of media, while integrating insights from scholarly sources.
Example:
For instance, you could choose to focus on the topic of wrongful convictions. You might
use the docuseries “When They See Us” as your media source and relate it to the course
material covered during the weeks on policing issues, punishment, and sentencing.
By completing this assignment, you will deepen your understanding of how media
representations align or diverge from the realities and complexities of the criminal justice
system.
The assignment is based on the way the criminal justice/criminal-legal system is
portrayed in popular culture, specifically music, tv, shows, docuseries, etc. . For the
assignment, students will write a 1300-2000 word paper (NOT INCLUDING
REFERENCES PAGE, TITLE PAGE, ETC.) that discusses the lyrics to a song,
album, discography or particular scene(s) from video content, and explains how it is
connected to the law. More specifically, the paper calls for students to discuss how the
media has a criminal justice/criminal-legal-related theme particular to the class and
explain how the system is portrayed. In addition to the paper, students need to attach a
copy of the lyrics to the song(s), album(s), video content and a link to where it can be
streamed or viewed (such as YouTube, Netflix, Apple Music, etc.). Aside from the media
and class material, students utilize scholarly or otherwise reputable articles to create a
paper that truly can encompass how the law is portrayed in various forms of popular
culture.
The hope is that by compelling students to think about how the criminal
justice/criminal-legal system is portrayed in different forms of media, you may be able to
better understand many of the theories discussed in class. In addition, this assignment
helps students appreciate law and society as a scholarly enterprise by showing them how
ubiquitous law is in our everyday lives, including in popular music.
General Guidelines:
● Must include at least 2 different weeks of material in the paper
● Must be 1300-3000 words
● Must be double spaced
● Must be in APA format… see link for help/a student sample of an APA formatted
paper.
