Case Study: Metaphysics

Suppose you work for an advertisement company whose next commercial is suited to present a new generation cellular phone. The company managers have endorsed the marketing strategy of “keeping it real” because they have found that their customers appreciate advertisements that bring out elements they consider most parallel to reality. You have been assigned to design this commercial with the stipulation of following the marketing strategy.

Task One: Describe your chosen icon for the Cell Phone and explain your choice about what you consider real. For instance, if you believe immaterial numbers to be the most real, describe your chosen numerical icon. On the other hand, if you believe materialism is the most real position, tell your physical object selected as the icon.

Task Two: Choose which elements of the phone to focus on that follow your chosen metaphysical theory. For instance, if you are an immaterialist who sees reality as a process like Hegel (Spirit), focus on the phone’s processes or activities rather than static programs or simply numerical statistics. If you are a materialist who values physical interactions among people, then focus on the camera application by going into detail about the physical features the phone can capture.
