Asian Americans on TV and Social Media

Description

Choose 3 social media posts pertaining to Asian Americans/Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders (they can pertain to specific ethnic groups within the larger AANHPI group).

Examples of social media posts (you can opt to write about these or choose your own):

https://www.instagram.com/p/CEjvmwPDCna/Links to an external site.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Cve7jnLAyau/?img_index=1Links to an external site.

https://www.instagram.com/p/C7C6-m0P_pxLinks to an external site.

For each social media post, choose one of the authors/artists assigned in this Module (Ono and Pham, Mansfield-Richardson, Balance, Wong, Conley), and interpret the post’s meaning, arguments, or social impact using that author’s/artist’s ideas. You can use the same author(s) to discuss more than one social media post–for example, you can use the Ono and Pham to explain all three social media posts that you choose–but if you cite an author or authors more than once, you must write about a different part of their text for every social media post.

For each of your write-ups, put the link to the social media post you are writing about at the top, and make clear which author you are using to interpret the post.

Example:

https://www.instagram.com/p/C7C6-m0P_pxLinks to an external site. This is an excerpt of comedian Ronny Chieng’s stand-up routine that was posted on Instagram. I am going to interpret the meaning of this excerpt through Ono and Pham’s argument that many Asian Americans in media are simultaneously depicted as doctors (i.e., highly educated, high-achieving professionals) and as threatening or undermining to the American way of life (i.e., as part of “the yellow peril”).

Each of your interpretive write-ups will be worth up to 4 points:

up to 1 point for your choice of a social media post relating to AANHPI people.

up to 3 points for how well/how clearly you interpret the meaning, arguments, or social impact of the post using the ideas of one of the assigned authors.
