SOC 300 Sociological Imagination assignment
Points to cover:
*Personal Troubles
*Public Issues
*Patterns of social life
*The connections between social structure and individual experience and agency. i.e., how our lives both are shaped by and help shape society.
*an appliction of the sociological imagination
Write a short paper (2-4 pages) in which you apply the sociological imagination to a specific individual. This individual can be one of the following:
- A specific historical example (e.g., Mahatma Gandhi, MLK, Bob Marley, Susan B Anthony, etc.)
- A public figure (e.g., Beyonce, Elon Musk, Taylor Swift)
- The subject of a detailed news report
- A fictional character (from literature, film, TV, graphic novels, etc.)
Application:
Start by giving a brief summary/overview about the individual you have selected. This a should be a (2-4 paragraph) description of the person and should convey who they are or were and offer some key details or highlights about them.
Then offer a bit of context. If they are a fictional character or a subject of a news report, contextualize them by briefly explaining (2-4 paragraph) how they fit in to the narrative or story line. Or contextualize the historical or societal setting of which they are a part.
Address the above points.
Then, discuss both connections between social structure and individual experience and agency for your chosen individual and evidence for or against the likelihood that a chosen figure exercised a sociological imagination. The way to do this is to use your own sociological imagination so as to speculate about your selected person. Discuss how you imagine that they saw themself and potentially understand their own personal experiences. Discuss how they may have understood themself within the context of society at large. Finally, address, briefly, a specific and serious “trouble” that this chosen figure experienced in their life, and indicate a specific possible connecfion between that trouble and the larger social context/social structure (e.g., Princess Diana experiencing a troubled marriage culminating in divorce (and an early accidental death) in 1997 tied to a number of issues regarding social class, gender, celebrity culture, and mass media.
Cite all sources.
Submit the following:
- A one paragraph mention of your chosen individual which includes a short explanation of why you have chosen this individual: due date11/8, late due date 11/11
- Final paper 12/12
