Career Packet – (15 points) – Based on what you will learn in class regarding the different types of resumes, you will need to determine which style works best for you and create a resume of your professional and volunteer experiences, to include any honors and awards. DO NOT make-up information on your resume, use the skills you already have. You will be required to submit a chronological or skills resume and a cover letter to apply for a position that is CURRENTLY vacant. You will need to provide a copy of the actual job posting and attach it to the assignment you upload for submission. This assignment should be catered to a company that you would be interested in working for and has a position closely related to your major, skills, and interests.
The entire Career Packet will consist of the following:

Resume:
Your resume is the key to getting through doors for interview. Your resume should be well-developed, demonstrate detail skills you posses (use action verbs and specific/quantifiable characteristics), be well-organized, and be detailed yet easy to review. Again, you will need to provide a copy of the actual job posting. Your resume should “speak” directly to the job in which you are applying. It should be catered to a company that you would be interested in working for and has a position closely related to your major, skills, and interests.
I have provide several documents that will help you begin to brainstorm in writing an impactful resume.
REMEMBER: Do not include a photos, graphics, or excessive font types with your resume. THIS IS A PROFESSIONAL PRODUCT, NOT A WORK OF ART. It should be appealing, reader friendly, and your BEST work. After all it represents YOU.
Cover letter – (formal letter format, not an email format):
For this portion of the assignment, you will produce a cover letter for a position for the position in which you are applying. The premise of this cover letter is to market yourself to your potential employer, providing such an impression that the hiring official will want to take a deep dive into your resume and schedule you for an interview (see provided examples). You will need to write your own cover letter, but samples will help you with the process.
Your cover letter should:
- Indicate the position for which you are applying
- Demonstrate your qualifications for the position – what you bring to the table
- Market you as a person the company will want to employ
- Follow the three-step writing process
- Be no more than a page
Follow-Up Letter (formal letter format, not an email format):
Your follow-up letter needs to reiterate your interest in the position, thank the prospective employer, reiterate why you strongly believe you are the best candidate, and a reminder of how they may contact you. Remember, this is a formal letter, NOT an email.
LinkedIn Account:
LinkedIn is a tremendous resource for those just starting out in the workforce. Use this opportunity to create a profile that demonstrates your skills and interests. Make connections that will matter. Find people in the industries/organizations in which you would like to work and connect with them as well.
