case discussion

Description

Use the Common Morality Framework discussed in our text. Your text also gives detailed examples of the activity below. I sense, we are mimicking the process of your author in the text book. Read the case study below, with instructions at the end.

Ali is a 19 year old who has went through a court diversion process and is being treated at an in-patient addiction centre north of Toronto. The property is beautiful, and Ali has decided that he may just take up hiking as a hobby he has enjoyed the experience in nature so much. He has struggled a great deal with substance use, being left to make his way on his own after being kicked out of his home at age 17. He has come and gone from multiple concurrent disorders programs, day treatments, and social service agencies.

Aside from a few bad days here and there, the staff feel he is doing tremendously well. Due to a miscommunication with his lawyer and case worker, Ali believes that he is required to involuntarily participate in another 2 months of treatment at the centre. The alternative is possible jail time if he were to leave. It is absolutely agreed on by all staff, and Ali in some part, that if he left the centre at this time he would revert back to his old patterns. Everything is set in terms of funding for him to be there. With one simple report from the social worker there, Ali has the funding to stay there for 2 more months to receive treatment (and continue those hikes). If the staff tell him the truth, that his involuntary stay is only required for 2 more week, he may leave.

The staff feel an incredible urge to not mention this information to the client, and continue with his treatment at the centre for another 2 months.

-Your task is to choose what questions within the common morality features (below) are relevant in determining the answer to what you should do as a social worker in this situation. List what questions are relevant (to be answered yes or no to), and what ones are obvious enough or “do not apply” that they need no further exploration. At the end, please make a decision of what you would do >>> Tell him, or keep the information from your client.
