Communications Question
Description
In this assignment, you will get creative to demonstrate your understanding of the theory of plate tectonics. This assignment addresses:
- Student Learning Outcome 1: Students will be able to use seafloor features to interpret the motion of the tectonic plates.Part 1 Create Your Planet
- Create a unique planet with oceans and continents and active plate tectonics. Draw a map of your entire planet by hand or digitally using software like InkscapeLinks to an external site., Adobe IllustratorLinks to an external site., Corel DrawLinks to an external site., or any AI platform (see AI Note below). You will be adding lots of details, so make your map big (at least 8″ x 10″). Your planet is uninhabited; life will evolve later (in your Lab Final Project!).
- Include at least three convergent boundaries (including at least two of the three subtypes), two divergent plate boundaries, and one transform plate boundary. Your plates should connect like puzzle pieces, just as we saw in Lab 2: Discovering Plate Tectonics.
- Highlight each boundary in red for divergent, blue for convergent, and green for transform (just like you did in Lab 2 Part 2).
- Given your planet’s plate boundaries and utilizing concepts from Lab 2 and Lab 3, illustrate the features associated with each plate boundary (e.g., earthquakes, island arcs, continental arcs, mountains, mid-ocean ridges, trenches, etc.) using appropriate symbols and labels on the map. Feel free to add rocks and sediments (from Lab 4: Marine Sediments, Rocks, and Depositional Environments), but this is not required. Include a legend to clarify the colors and symbols used. This is your opportunity to show what you know, instead of taking a midterm exam!
- Take a picture of your map or save your digital image (jpg or pdf). Be sure to save your original map, as we will return to your planet at the end of the term to add to it! You will be submitting your map here, along with a video explaining it.
