Week 3
The Organizing Function!
This week’s two themes are developed from Fayol’s P-O-L-C framework and related to how organizations organize to achieve maximum efficiency, productivity, and profit. As you learned last week, “organizing” is the second primary function of management within the P-O-L-C framework. The organizing function is where management synchronizes and combines the organization’s resources (people, capital, and physical assets) to achieve the goals that were developed in the first stage of the P-O-L-C framework, planning.
The first theme you will read about this week is organizational structure. The second theme deals with the importance of diversity throughout an organization to ensure a culture develops that encourages multiple viewpoints on various issues and challenges confronting all businesses seeking sustainability and obtaining a competitive advantage over their rivals.
Think for a minute about the organization of your personal space. You have organized your space to be as efficient as possible toward accomplishing critical tasks. Your personal office equipment (staplers, pens, pencils, tape dispensers, and the like) is readily available and neatly arranged. Your computer is in a place that is comfortable and conducive to being productive. In order to function efficiently, organizations must also organize for maximum efficiency.
Managers need to ensure the organization is structured to maximize efficiency, productivity, and profit. At this organizational level, the proper structure is essential to business success. Business must allocate resources to where they are needed. Products and services need delivery to customers. In some industries, raw materials need to be purchased and converted to consumer goods. Employees must be hired and trained to do their jobs properly. An efficient organizational structure is required to accomplish all of the needs mentioned above.
Decisions about the best organizational structure often are driven by the particular industry where an enterprise conducts business. In industries where rapid change occurs, the organizational structure must be fluid and conducive to rapid strategy adjustments. Such an organizational structure will be different from the organizational structure found in stable industries.
As an organization grows, so does the complexity of its organizational structure. An organizational structure can grow from a few functions located in a central complex to a massive set of complex organizations across the globe. All organizations must continually reassess their functionality to ensure maximum efficiency, productivity, and profit. They must also ensure that a wide range of diverse opinions exists to ensure the best decisions emerge.
