Description
Unit 9 Lab: Hardening Windows
Outcomes addressed in this activity:
Unit Outcomes:
- Discover the Windows event logs that are key to a forensic exam.
- Use the creation date of artifacts in a forensic exam.
- Investigate the registry in a forensic exam.
Course Outcome:
IT411-6: Investigate current practices and trends in digital and network forensics.
Purpose
The most likely target of a forensic investigation is the workstation. This is because workstations can be compromised, en masse, via attacks such as pass the hash. This lab will examine a typical workstation that can be found in corporate environments.
Part 1 Lab: Hardening Windows
Complete the lab “Hardening Windows” in the InfoSec Learning (ISL) environment located in Unit 9. Completion is automatically graded and posted to the Gradebook entry for the lab.
Part 2 Assignment: Written Portion Requirements
Security-related issues can include items such as default usernames and passwords, clear text protocols like FTP and Telnet, and poorly configured web services. When Linux systems are not secured properly, they can be compromised, which could lead to data leakage as well as costly remediation. The Linux operating system has a strong reputation for taking security seriously, but it still needs to be updated and maintained on a regular basis to keep it from being compromised.
In 500 words or more, answer the following:
- What are some things you can use to protect network traffic from being sniffed if you are forced to use unsecure protocols that transmit data in clear text?
- How does updating the operating system of Linux different from updating Windows?
The written portion must contain sufficient information to adequately address the questions and be free from grammar and spelling errors. The paper should be provided in APA format.
For assistance with APA requirements, please use the resources provided in the Academic Tools section of the course. Points deducted from grade for each writing, spelling, or grammar error are at your instructor’s discretion.
Review the policy on plagiarism. This policy will be strictly enforced on all applicable labs and discussion posts. If you have any questions, please contact your professor.
