Most people have heard of GMOs. In spite of having strong opinions about the use of genetically modified foods, many people can’t explain much about them. For this discussion, you should read Section 13.6 (Biotechnology) in your textbook, and the Debate Combating Vitamin A Deficiency with Golden Rice which is found in Section 14.4 of Chapter 14 (page 472).

Discuss the following:

  • How might biotechnology alter the quantity, quality, cost, safety, and shelf life of the food supply?
  • How has biotechnology created the potential for health problems and environmental damage?
  • Do you think the benefits of the GM crop “Golden Rice” outweigh the possible risks of genetic modification? (Explain your answer. Writing “Yes” or “No” is not sufficient.)
