Art is a reflection of our emotions and experiences, a culmination of things that make us who we are. It is the mirror into our brains of an idea that we can envision and articulate into an image, a movement, a story, or a song. It is a part of the human experience that we use in different forms. One example I can think of is Jorge Rivera-Herrans’ “EPIC: The Musical”, a musical re-telling of Homer’s “The Odyssey.” Art is unique in the way that everyone’s interpretation of the same piece will differ because art is more than surface-level aesthetics, it is an experience that can alter your own reality. 

Creativity is a new perspective that can change the way people think about things, it is used to show a different interpretation. In my example, Jorge uses a music medium to show Odysseus slowly going mad after each trial he faces and descending into becoming a monster himself. He does have to change some of the story to fit the musical timeline and some of his interpretations of the text are more fantasy-like, such as the “floating islands” which were just islands in the ocean, but Jorge interpreted it literally. Moreover, creativity is a driving force that guides people to take action related to the concepts and experiences expressed within the media. 

Art for daily use adds aesthetics and function to our lives. Paintings, depending on the type of art, can provide a comforting feeling that makes a room feel unified and put together. Cutlery not only provides an easier experience while eating, but it provides a nice professional and skilled feeling in a kitchen when put out in a block or rack. In my own life, I enjoy over-engineered stationary. They provide a perfect match to the aesthetics I enjoy while providing the function of writing, organization with color, or even a simple creativity outlet. Art for daily lives is the combination of creativity put to the test through a medium to create something that adds value or efficiency to everyday life.
