Application 1

Description

Concepts, Variables, Measures, Covariation and Data Sources.

Your assignment is at this link: Application #1 Figures Download Application #1 Figures.

Directions

For all 4 Figures in the attached assignment, write in the correct:

The concept (one word, social life – these are listed in my Page on Concepts in the First Module)

The variables – list each variable

List how each variable is measured

The data source (located under the Figure)

The covariation (the story of how the variables relate to one another). Covariation should be a statement of how X affects Y. For example, what is the effect of Race on Graduation Rates? If there is covariation in the measures of Race, briefly list what the Figure shows (what group is most, least, or above or below average).

Each Figure is worth 5 points.

All work should be typed and uploaded to this assignment submission window. Remember, I cannot open “cloud” submissions (google cloud, iCloud, etc.). Please convert your work to either a doc/docx or pdf file to successfully submit it.

Some reminders to help you successfully complete this assignment:

Concept (abstract idea that begins the research process): what is the scientist BIG idea/s, usually one word (education, criminology, sexuality, stratification)?

Variables (some general feature or aspect that differs from one case to the next within a particular set): What variable/s are used to measure a concept?

Measure: How are the variables specified (example: we generally measure sex as male and female – sometimes we include nonbinary or other measures of sex)?

Source: Where the data used in the analysis originate.

Covariation (general pattern or correspondence between variable): What is the relationship between the variables? How do the measures of X affect Y?
