HIST 1301

FALL 2024

It’s a U.S History paper on

“Washington’s Farewell Address

Written Assignments

Each student will write a three page, double-spaced, typewritten paper dealing with some facet or personality of the period. (Since typing fonts and margins vary, the optimum is approximately nine hundred words). These papers will basically be expository in nature, but where appropriate they must be critical. (If, for example, the sources disagree, the student must make those differences clear and attempt to solve the disagreement).

Each student will turn in their assignment through Blackboard.

Word Count:

900 words is optimal. You can go 25 under or 25 over.

Note: the 900-word count applies specifically to the text of the paper, not to the works cited page, citations, nor the title information, nor your name or my name, or the class number, or the date.

Sources

Each paper must use three sources; one MUST be a print source (e-books will count as a print source).

PRINT:

Unacceptable Sources

General encyclopedias such as Britannica or World Book.

Popular weekly or monthly non-scholarly magazines such as Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, etc.

Books written to a teen or child audience.

Acceptable Sources

Subject specific encyclopedias such as, for example, Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History: The Black Experience in the Americas, or Encyclopedia of Postwar Culture.  You might also look for dictionaries such as Dictionary of American Politics or other subject specific dictionaries.

Academic journals are acceptable.

Books written to an adult audience.

E-books that are not general encyclopedias.

ELECTRONIC

Unacceptable Sources:

Wiki-anything.

Commercial oriented websites (generally ending in .com, although some exceptions can be made but check with me before using them)

Websites maintained by individuals not recognized as experts on the subject at hand.

CD-Rom-anything.

Acceptable Sources:

Websites maintained by universities or museums, archives, or libraries or similar institutions. Look for URLs ending in .edu, .org, or .gov.

Academic databases accessed through the Austin Community College or other libraries.

Questions about sources should be asked before an assignment is turned in. If you turn in an assignment with an unacceptable source, points will be lost.

WORKS CITED

You may choose your own style, i.e. Chicago, APA, MLA, Turabian, etc., but it must be consistent.  ANY SOURCE LISTED IN THE WORKS CITED MUST BE CITED IN THE PAPER AT LEAST ONCE.

CITATIONS-Endnotes or footnotes are preferable to parenthetical

You may choose your own style, i.e. Chicago, APA, MLA, Turabian, etc., but it must be consistent.  Any source that shows up in your works cited page must actually be cited in your paper.

Basic style guides can be found on the ACC library website. You can also check the Owl at Perdue website. The ACC library also has copies of the various style guides that can be consulted. You may of course, purchase your own print copy if necessary.

DIRECT QUOTES

Because this assignment emphasizes synthesizing information into your own words, direct quotes should take up no more than 15% of the total word count.
