Carefully review your 3-day food journal to answer the following questions about your recent food choices and eating behaviors. Consider all aspects of your eating episodes (e.g., what, when, how much, where, who with, why) when responding to the questions below. For Questions 1 through 5, you must support your responses with specific examples from your food journal (e.g., “On day 2, I noticed that for eating episodes 3 and 5…”).

Complete, thoughtful responses to each question are typically no less than 150 words in length and include at least one explicit example from the food journal worksheets. Per the assignment rubric, writing mechanics (grammar, punctuation, and spelling) are also considered part of your grade on this assignment.

1. Discuss how your personal taste preferences are evident in your eating episodes. Preferences fall under the “Intrapersonal” level of the SEM. While preferences are complex, you can discuss a few representative examples of how your personal food preferences are illustrated in your eating episodes.

2. Discuss how your knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and/or values are evident in your eating episodes. Integrate influences that align with the “Intrapersonal” level of the SEM. As you think about this question, notice if there were any eating episodes where your knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about foods/beverage took precedence over the taste of certain foods.

5. Discuss how one or more of your eating episodes was influenced in some way by food-related marketing strategies (e.g., promotions/discounts, product placement, advertisements). These also relate to the Organizational/Institutional level of the SEM as marketing strategies are tools used often by food-related businesses.

6. Discuss how one or more of your eating episodes was shaped in full or in part by the geographic community in which you currently live. Integrate influences that align with the “Community” level of the SEM. Consider the type, variety, and quality of food-related businesses in your community (e.g., grocery stores, corner stores, restaurants, fast food, etc.). A complete response should start off with a brief description of your geographic community.

7. Discuss (a) how your awareness of the influences shaping your personal food choices and eating behaviors changed as a result of completing this activity, and (b) why it is useful for individuals to have a broader view of the influences on their food choices.

8. For two or more levels of influences you have identified in your responses to questions 1-5, describe some ways that those influences could leveraged to shape your eating patterns in a more desirable direction. You decide for yourself what is “more desirable” (e.g., eating more fruit; eating fewer processed foods; stopping consumption when you are full versus when your plate is empty; drinking more water; eating more foods associated with your cultural heritage; eating less meat). A complete response should start off with a brief description of what you deem “more desirable” in terms of what/how you eat.
