Chapters 4 and 5

Discussion forums will provide a way for you to critically engage the course readings with your classmates and to further discuss your reflections on the readings and their relevance to your own life, history, and future endeavors. You will be responsible for writing and posting a 500-word reflective essay by 9pm on Tuesdays of the weeks forums are assigned. You will also include a well-structured discussion eliciting question from that week’s reading. Lastly you must post responses of at least 250 words to at least two students’ questions by Saturdays @ 9pm. You may also submit an audio or video essay or response. If you’re familiar with how to upload or record audio or videos to Canvas, please feel free to respond using those means instead of writing as well. Audio or video essays must be at least 3 minutes in length and must be just as thorough/critical as a written submission. As you write your reflective essay, consider the following: What are the key takeaways from the text? What new knowledge did you gain from the text? What questions do you have of the text? How might you be thinking differently about African American experiences or history? This reflective essay should be more of an analysis and less of a summary as it will show that you’ve engaged with the course material. The discussion eliciting questions you pose should be open ended enough to warrant a response. Please do not ask simple yes or no, true/false questions. While it is more than acceptable to discuss personal experience in your responses to your classmates, your responses should also show that you have critically engaged the course material.
