Essays should be 750 words in length; that means three full pages. The way words are counted is this: find a line of text that goes across the page. In other words, not a line that is indented or is a short stub at the end of a sentence, but a full line of text. Count all words that are three letters or more. That number should be 12-13. Multiply the number of words per line by the total number of lines in the paper. One page should come out to 250 words. Do not use the word count on the computer to come to your total.
The essay should have five paragraphs: an introduction, a body made up of three paragraphs, and a conclusion.
The introduction should contain the thesis and your three-part argument that supports the thesis. Think of the argument as the way you are going to prove the thesis.
The body should elaborate on the three points of the argument. This is where your analysis of the thesis takes place. Each paragraph will cover one point.
The conclusion restates the thesis and argument. Do not introduce new ideas at this point. All analysis and argument should be confined to the body. Do not use the phrase “in conclusion” in the conclusion.
Use past tense throughout, in the third person formal. Spelling and grammar will be part of the grading criteria. The coversheet and pages of each essay should be submitted together. Please write out all numbers smaller than 100, and give the full name of individuals at the first mention. After the first mention, use the last name. Points will be deducted for papers that run long or are too short.
All ideas and facts used in the paper must be cited. This class will use Chicago Manual of Style, or Turabian, to show where the ideas or facts used in the paper came from. One may use the quick guide at http://www.press.uchicago.edu/books/turabian/turabian_citationguide.html which should be sufficient for our purposes. We are using bibliography and endnotes. You will need at least ten citations.
