1. Explain the iceberg model of culture. Describe how the elements of culture fit into the iceberg model and provide examples from the model in your explanation. In addition, explain why culture matters in classrooms and describe two ways you could create a classroom environment that is welcoming of all cultures.
2. In the past several months we have witnessed global demonstrations in support of Black lives and in protest of police and institutional violence against people of color. Discuss how the Black Lives Matter protests, along with associated strikes and boycotts for racial justice, interact with the teaching and learning that happens in public schools. Do Black lives matter in schools? Be sure to support your arguments by including evidence from the readings/viewings so far. Explain how you, as a teacher, can be an advocate for racial justice in schools. Include at least three examples.
3. Define culturally relevant pedagogy. Your answer should include a discussion of the three components described by Ladson-Billings. In addition, select one of the myths of culturally relevant pedagogy identified by Irvine and discuss why it is a myth. Finally, describe how you plan to incorporate culturally relevant practices in your classroom, including at least three specific examples.
