US history to 1877 Discussion- Week 1
Description
The conquistador, Hernan Cortes , relied upon the translation and interpretation skills of a young Native woman named Malinali. She would later become known by other names — La Malinche, Dona Marina, and Malintzin. She was critical to Spanish success. Today she has a very mixed legacy. Some honor her skill and leadership role, while others consider her a traitor of the highest order.
For your discussion this week, read more about the controversy surrounding Malinali in this article:

and think about what you have read about Spanish conquest of the Mexica (Aztecs).
Why was Malinali’s work so important?
Why do some people consider her a person to be admired, and why to others consider her a traitor?
Is there anything you learned about her story that surprised you?
What is your opinion of Malinali and why?
