Prompt
Think about a community to which you belong. This might be tied to your gender, race, community or religion. Is this community accurately represented by entertainment? Or is your community presented as a stereotype or inaccurately in another way? This is an illustration essay. Gather evidence from what you watch, listen or read. Refer to specific episodes, dialogue and/or lyrics to defend your claim.

Brainstorming ideas:

Look for yourself in billboards where you drive in advertisements you see. Think of commercials you have seen and even what you see on cereal boxes! Collect these visual pieces of evidence to analyze. Then create a claim. Can you say that advertising is making progress in representing diverse communities? You could even compare/contrast advertisements from the past vs today.

Think about what you watch or listen to from a different angle. What might someone who does NOT belong to your community infer by what they see or hear?

Make a list of things that people who know you have said “you have to check this out” because of the community to which you belong. Or have you ever shared something because you were excited about the content? Think about what elements moved them or you to share the song, movie, show, etc. That will lead you to specific evidence.

What I’ll be assessing:

• Clear essay structure. An introduction that identifies the community to which you belong, distinct body paragraphs and a conclusion that reflects or gives a call to action.Thesisand topic sentencesmustprovide a clear structure andlogical organization for your discussion.

• Your ability to identify appropriate evidence. You might need to summarizethe plotline of a show or the history of the artist to provide context necessary to understand the evidence you select.

• Sufficient development. Every paragraph should have at least two specific examples from the entertainment source you chose to explore (TV and/or advertisements; music; movies). Your discussion will employ inference in order to analyze the validity of the example.
