Write a speech with a specific purpose and specific audience; use a variety of persuasive appeals to convince your audience of your claim. After the speech, write an analysis describing the persuasive strategies you used and discussing why you used them.
Essay 1: First Draft Requirements
Speech:
Uses MLA format: typed, double spaced, name/instructor/class/date top left (do not use header), saved in a .doc, .docx, or .rtf file format, and using Arial 12 or Times New Roman 12 point font. For additional information, see “MLA Tutorial #1: Basic Paper Format” .
Has a particular and specific audience the speech is directed to.
Has a topic and a claim/main point/main idea that the speaker is trying to persuade his or her audience of which is based on direct and personal experience; published research is optional
Cites any published research correctly, if used
Includes main point either at the beginning or end of the paper.
Has at least four separate paragraphs.
Uses rhetorical or persuasive appeals such as appeals to logic and reasoning; appeals to emotion; appeals to credibility as appropriate.
May use published facts or research; if so in-text citations and a a Works Cited page is included. See “Formatting the Works Cited Page” and “Sample Citation”
If published facts are used avoids plagiarism by using quotation marks around exact words, phrases, or sentences from the speech and introduces quotes with author tags such as “According to . . .” See “Use Evidence.”
Is at least 750 words.
Is uploaded to the Assignment 1 submission folder in either .doc, .docx, or .rtf file format.
Analysis:
Starts on a separate page after end of speech with centered title Analysis.
Is at least 200 words.
Discusses specific persuasive strategies used; may include a look at the use of logic or reason or facts to persuade; the use of emotional appeals conveyed through word choice, description, personal examples; the use of ethical appeal centered on creating credibility, good character, and trust with the audience.
Analyzes why those persuasive strategies were used and their possible effectiveness.
