Discussion 1: Striving for Success in the College Classroom

Description

First read/view “In Praise of the F Word” by Mary Sherry and “Too Much Pressure” by Colleen Wenke

Both Sherry and Wenke address the ideas of a student’s role in the classroom as well as the underlying idea of what it means to be successful. Write a short paragraph voicing your opinion of how these two authors have impacted you. Think about whether you agree or disagree with Sherry’s attitude towards failure in the article, “In Praise of the F Word.” Explain your viewpoint. Think about whether or not you agree with Wenke’s main argument concerning student cheating in the article “Too Much Pressure.” Explain your viewpoint.

To get full credit for your submission:

1. Submit your response by the due date

2. Your paragraph should be at least 8-10 complete sentences long and contain transition words.

3. Integrate a long quote from either of the readings to support your point of view. (A long quote must be introduced with an introductory phrase; use a colon : to introduce the quote; a long quote is 4 lines or more; all lines of the quote are indented/there are no quotation marks with a long quote; use ( ) with the author’s last name after the quote; the period goes at the end of the last word in the quote, followed by the ( )

4. For example, let’s say I was inspired by Steve Harvey’s “Imagination is Everything.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbEMIw3ecGI

To create a long quote, I need 4 lines or more of his words, so my quote might look something like this…

Many successful people believe that imagination is the driving force that will lead to success as confirmed by a well known icon:

When you imagine things, it’s actually God showing you a preview of a coming attraction he has for you. The biggest dream killer is telling a small minded person what’s in your imagination. Wondering why your friends or family shot down one of your best ideas? Because God gave it to you not them. (Harvey)

Now, you try and create a long quote for Discussion 2 that follows this same format.
